Victor Lawson’s Obituary

At 8:20 a.m. on Saturday, March 30, 2019, Rev. Victor Freeman Lawson, loving husband and father of five went to be with his Lord and Savior suddenly at the age of 76 while being cared for at the Berkeley Medical Center in Martinsburg, West Virginia.

Victor was born on January 12, 1943, in Washington, D.C., to Isabel Maddox and Victor Lawson. The first of two boys, they grew up in North East Washington, D.C. He attended high school in the District of Columbia and in 1964 received a bachelor of arts from St. Augustine’s College in Raleigh, North Carolina. His post graduate work included the Protestant Episcopal Theological Seminary in Alexandria, Virginia, and the Berkeley Divinity School at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. 

He devoted his life to the calling of under shepherd, pastoring God’s faithful and preaching the gospel truth for over 42 years.He most recently served as rector at the Nelson Cluster Parish in West Virginia from 1999 until he retired in 2009. He was the rector at the Church of Our Savior, Brookland Parish in Washington, D.C., from 1976 through 1999. His service to the Lord extended to volunteering on numerous community organizations, boards and committees.

Victor was a servant of the Lord, a beacon unto his family, and a stalwart in the community. After his retirement he continued to provide biblical counsel and guidance, intercessory prayer, stewardship of God’s Word, in addition to performing hospital visitations, and facilitating weddings and celebrations of life. His children and grandchildren were a source of immense joy and gratification, engaging them in shared passions for books, music, technology, and model trains. Ever the student, Victor enjoyed expanding his depth and breadth of knowledge, ranging from a wide-variety of subjects, including community affairs and African American history.

Those left to cherish His memory are: Wife, Ruby Lawson, Two Daughters, Karla Lawson (Adam), Georgette Lewis (DeLante) Three Sons, Torrance Dawkins (Patricia), Charles Dawkins (Veronica), George Dawkins (Tiara), Eight Grandchildren, Mercedes Dawkins, Alexis Dawkins, Torrance Dawkins Jr, Azariah Lewis, Jordan Lewis, Isis Lawson Parnes, Jeffrey Lewis, great grandchildren, Alijah Dawkins, One Brother, Slater Maddox, and a host of nieces nephews cousins and devoted friends. He is preceded in death by his father Victor Lawson and mother Isabel Maddox.
